My Son’s New Bedroom Design
While Karen and I were on our family vacation we schemed up a plan to remodel our son’s bedroom. Karen proposed burlap on a wall, and I proposed a wall covered in wood from shipping pallets. We also thought it would be cool to have some old military ammo boxes to put on his wall as shelves. We knew there was a military surplus store in Springfield, Missouri so Mason, Karen and I jumped in the car and headed out to see what we could find.
We didn’t find any ammo boxes but we did find camouflage burlap and some used military patches. I kept Mason busy looking other cool military stuff while Karen quickly paid for our loot. A few days later we began our trek home while the kids enjoyed more time with family and friends.
The road home led through many small towns in Oklahoma and along the road were several junk markets. That is where we found the ammo cases for $5 each, some great Coke crates for $3 and a camo belt with canteen for $15. Mason had been wanting a place for his Coke can collection. For the past few months his collection piled up on the Pantry floor while we considered the best way to display them.
From Oklahoma, we entered Texas and stayed overnight in Dallas. Driving around Dallas we spotted a weekend Flea Market and began digging for some treasures. All I need to say is “Jackpot!” We found an old army back-pack and canvas case to help accessorize the room.
The final stop was a leisure walk through IKEA just outside of Austin, Texas. We found a great light fixture and bed lamp for a total of $25.

What a wonderfully creative remodel. I absolutely love it and especially love his reaction. I am constantly amazed at your innovative ideas. GREAT job, and love reading your posts. Thanks for sharing.
Very cool! What a fun room! Thanks for sharing all of the pics and videos. Fun to see Mason’s reaction, too.
Thanks Betsy… it was a lot of fun pulling it together and seeing Mason’s reaction!
Thanks Debbi!
Hey, his bedroom looks great! I’ll bet his buddies love hanging out in his room even more now. Am in the process of redecorating my bedroom on a shoestring budget and I love the makeover you’ve given your son’s room. I’m keeping it simple with a camp bed, sleeping bag, camo mesh hide and ammo boxes.
I love the idea of Camo mesh netting! May introduce that later as a little surprise once the newness wears off. Thanks for the kind words. Your are right, his buddies do love hanging out in his room and so does he. Before he rarely spent time in his room and now we hang out there together and build with Lego’s.
