Living on the Road III

Part III – Interview with Steve, a homeless man

As I listened to Steve share his story, I became impressed with his personal awareness of how cynical he had become of people. Somehow the kindness of many young people had broken through his cynicism and he chose to believe that people are inherently good. I don’t agree with Steve, but I do appreciate his willingness to look for the good in people rather than clinging to skepticism.

Another thought stood out about Steve. I was struck by how grateful he was for the little things. Whether he received pocket change instead of dollar bills, or a pair of socks, Steve was thankful for any kind gesture people offered. As he ended our time together Steve pointed out that homeless travelers aren’t looking for a grand jester of kindness. It is the little things that add up and every little act of kindness helps.

Steve has been on my mind ever since we met. I’ve prayed for him. I’ve wondered if he’s made it to California for the second time this year. I’m Thankful for the time we spent together and for the insightful reminders he shared. I am glad I was able to tell him about Jesus, pray with him, and get him to a motel that night. He is a gentle soul who is loved by Jesus and in need of a savior. Steve and Matthew West have both recently reminded me that life is about more than me and my own little world.

  1. Hey Gerry!

I tried to watch this…but it says the video is private. The other videos are great. Thanks for taking the time to record these. A whole collection of these may provide some wisdom and inspiration for people when it comes to dealing with the homeless.

  2. Thanks for the heads up. It is fixed now. I accidentally left it on private after I published the post. Thanks for taking the time to watch the videos. I believe I have much to learn about people who are homeless. I felt compelled to bring a guy home for a shower and some turkey dinner a couple of days ago. I introduced him to my kids and he pulled out his guitar and we sang amazing grace together. His name is Ricardo Spadaro and he is heading for North Carolina for Christmas with his mom. Please pray for him when you think of him.
