7 Steps to Delivering a Solution

7 Steps to Delivering a Solution

Whether at work or at home, there is always a time when a solution is needed. I always look forward to going home at the end of the day. The end of day routine usually goes like this. I lock my computer and sling my laptop bag over my shoulder as I head for the car. I call my wife to let her know I am on my way home. The drive takes about 20 minutes and it is just enough time for my thoughts to shift from work to home, from team leader to husband and dad.

I walk through the door of the house into the arms of my wife. I like to freeze-frame those moments in my mind during my day. The conversation that follows explores the day’s accomplishments. There are some days when I get very excited about what was accomplished. I get energized when I see significant progress toward meeting a need or witness the implementation of a new process that delivers greater efficiency and improves quality.

I bet Nehemiah felt the same way the night he returned home from witnessing the final stone being placed into the wall around Jerusalem. I can imagine how energized and excited he was as his hand touched the finished wall and he gazed upon it with admiration. He had identified a need and helped lead a team to deliver a solution. Reading through the first three chapters of Nehemiah helped me understand seven steps he went through to deliver a solution.

These are the seven steps every leader should consider to deliver a solution:

1. Identify the need
2. Seek permission/resources to meet the need
3. Research the extent of the need before pinpointing the best solution
4. Engage others in helping implement the solution
5. Refuse to be sidetracked when opposition surfaces
6. Push through to completion
7. Celebrate success with the team

A leader can accomplish more than they ever thought possible when they are devoted to delivering solutions. Putting energy and thought into improving the lives of others will inspire others to do the same as they experience the benefits.

Gerry, thanks for the 7 steps. I read the first three chapters of Nehemiah this morning, and this helped me consider some ways to apply what I read.

  2. Awesome! Thanks for the feedback!
